This year numbers of our members attended a Dinner at the Naval Military & Airforce Club on the Saturday evening prior to the service. We were addressed by Brigadier Alison Creagh, CSC a veteran of most recent Peacekeeping missions as well as Iraq and Afghanistan. Although numbers weren't what we might have hoped for it was an excellent evening none the less.
Sunday 14 Septemberv was perfect weather for our annual service. This year was the 20th occasion on which we observed a commemoration of Peacekeeping Service. From 1995-2011 it had been held on UN Day on the 26th October. To conform to what has become national practice we switched to 14 September in 2012.
This year we broke with tradition and held the service at the back of the National War Memorial shielding us somewhat from the traffic noise. With more shade, the solemnity of the other nearby memorials and the sound of the fountain feature on the reverse side of the ANM made for a very pleasant backdrop. Thanks to all of those involved in setting things up for the day. We repaired to the London Tavern after the service.
